The first stage of Design WA is now out and it is worth having a look! Alternatively, you can discuss this with one of our building surveyors. The Design WA Guidelines is a set of policies in terms of design quality and built form outcomes from large-scale structure planning to development applications and subdivision considerations.

The mechanisms are described into 3 different strategy of design which are: Design Principles, Design Review ad Design Skills.
Design principles are what define a building with a “good design”. It includes context and character, landscape quality, built form and scale, functionality and build quality, sustainability, amenity, legibility, safety, community and aesthetics.
Design Review involves a panel of experts on the built environment in order to assess the proposed design following the methodology described in the WAPC Design Review Guide. This expertise reveals to be helpful when it comes to design an innovating and complex building. Indeed, it provides guidance and interpretation on the application of design elements and principles. Building surveyors have their own expertise and can guide you throughout the Design Review.
Finally, a skilled architect or competent building designer is engaged to design the proposal development. Our building designers and building surveyors work closely to ensure the design meets both the Design Principles and the BCA. This third measure, called Design Skills, issues a design statement where the architect or building designer demonstrates that the development:

1. meets the Design Principles listed above,
2. justifies how it achieves the design objectives, criteria and guidelines when relevant.

The policies will take into effect on 24 May, 2019. Two other stages are under development and will mainly talk about precinct design and medium density development.
